I’m going to cut to the chase on this topic. Routinely practicing balance and stability training is very important to the future you. I can’t tell you how many clients I have worked with who become just plain baffled at themselves. They don’t understand why their bodies are unable to do some of the things I ask them. The most common struggles? Standing on a single foot for at least 10 seconds or walking in a straight line and having opposing limbs meet.

But why does any of that matter? You may be thinking that you don’t do those moves in everyday life regularly, so why would you ever be doing them in the future? While these particular moves may not be vital to your future, let’s think about how they can improve your everyday activities going forward.

1. Working Outside
As most of us get into our 40’s and later, we find ourselves spending a lot of time doing yard work for enjoyment and of course for necessity. I have had many clients who struggle while working in their yards and gardens because they can’t properly position themselves to do the work. They find themselves falling over, tripping, and stumbling. If you hurt yourself while alone outside, who knows when someone could come for help. No one wants to find themselves in that position as they age. It can be a scary thought.

2. Everyday Movements
What qualifies as an everyday movement? Reaching up into your closet shelves, grabbing around at different angles in your cabinets, or running past obstacles in your house to answer a ringing phone. To do each of these things, you need to have a solid foundation (core strength). This foundation will keep you bobbing, weaving, reaching and bending, to the best of your abilities. No falling, tripping, sprains or breaks for you!

3. Being Active with Family and Friends
You don’t want to be the grandma or grandpa that can’t run around and chase your grandkids around the back yard. You also don’t want to be the mom or dad that can’t help your kids practice sports, because you can’t keep yourself balanced, upright, and steady. By not being balanced and stable, you are setting yourself up for a lot of physical limitations in the future. No one wants that! We all want to make fun memories with our families and friends!
