I wrote last week about the importance of goal setting and how it truly can make or break your success, when it comes to health and fitness. There are so many people that are just dying to know the “secrets” of losing weight or the “magic” food that will control your eating. But today I want to let you know that it is NOT time to give up on yourself, even if you have fallen off track. So many people think that if they eat unhealthy foods at breakfast then they have ruined their whole entire day of an attempt at healthy living. Why? Who made that rule? You made a mistake, now it is time to forget about it and move on with your day. You are in control of yourself. That means YOU and you alone are in charge of making healthy decisions for the rest of your day.

That type of scenario has always made me laugh. Not like laugh at people, but laugh at the fact that it is so easy to make excuses. So what if you had pizza on Wednesday? That by no means suggests that you have completely ruined the entire week and you have to start over again on Monday. If you ever catch yourself thinking that, I want my words to echo in your brain –  “MY FAILURE IS MY FAULT!”

Ouch. Harsh? Maybe, but if you’ve been reading my articles or worked with me at all you know that I don’t believe in sugar coating anything. Let’s talk about a real life scenario: It’s your friend’s birthday and she wants to go out for Mexican food. She just so happens to pick your absolute favorite Mexican restaurant.

Do you…

  1. Decline the invitation and hope your friend understands.
  2. Eat like an out of control barbarian because, come on, its MEXICAN FOOD! You can start this healthy thing again tomorrow or the next day.
  3. Get your head straight and go to this party with your “self-control” pants on.

The answer is C. Go to the website and look over the menu in advance. Check out the options that they have and see what would work with your eating plan.

Worried about getting embarrassed looks from your family and friends? They’ll get over it. If you’re like me, you may enjoy the absolute torture you put your spouse through when it comes your turn to order. I don’t eat meat and countless other animal products so I get looked at like an alien. A few repulsed looks here and there are worth doing what is right for your health and personal nutrition views. Don’t let anyone ever guilt you out of that!

With all that being said, making a mistake doesn’t mean you get to throw in the towel and give up on yourself! It means you are human and are taking your health and fitness goals one day at a time, one meal at a time. You can do it, friends!
