One of the biggest excuses people give for being out of shape is “not having enough time.” Life’s busy, and it’s hard to get to the gym in the midst of a crazy day. I get it! But I want to reassure you that a good workout doesn’t have to take up a lot of time at all.
Here are some simple tips for overcoming the time obstacle that so many of us struggle with.
- Have a plan before you go: Don’t aimlessly walk from machine to machine. Know what you want to get accomplished and stick to it.
- Circuits and supersets: You can get a lot of work done in a short period of time if you do back-to-back exercises. Keep your heart rate up the entire workout; you don’t have to waste time resting between sets, especially if you perform exercises that utilize opposing muscle groups. When I’m crunched for time I’ll often do compound exercises or high-intensity interval training; these methods allow me to multitask and get home quicker.
- Avoid phone calls and social media: The smartphone can stay in the car. It only wastes time.
- Group exercise: If you’re trying to overcome a time obstacle, it’s often a good idea to take a good group exercise class that utilizes weights and cardio. It’ll help keep you focused and efficient. And after an hour, you can typically be done for the day.
