If you are alive and breathing, then you are probably no stranger to the world of social media. You almost have to be completely blind to not see the power of social media marketing, with regards to small and large businesses. Social media is the go-to if you want to reach a specific audience to promote your product or business. You can select the age range you want to target and you can pinpoint a 0-100 mile radius of people that can be reached with your advertisements- it’s really ingenious.
Unfortunately, with all the good, comes some bad. In this case, the bad I chose to harp on in this article is “weight loss teas”. These teas drive me absolutely nuts. There are over 10+ different tea brands that I have found JUST on Instagram alone, that claim miraculous weight loss results.
SPOILER ALERT: If you drink these teas and continue to not workout and eat properly, you will stay overweight. That’s right! The skinny, chiseled models that you see holding the bag of tea in their hand, while nonchalantly looking over their shoulder and laughing as they walk into the sunset… IS A SHAM! Shocker, right? In all fairness, I did say that social media marketing is ingenious and here is a picture perfect example of just that. Imagery is what sells. Most people in this world are receptive to visual learning. Those same visual learners, like to just “accept” anything placed front of them that is visually pleasing. Marketers have learned that, too. They know that most of us are visual people and that we all want to lose weight without putting in the effort. So the marketers of these weight loss teas set a scene:
The scene is normally of a tan, very thin, yet toned young girl, who is half naked and smiling. She is typically in some type of an outrageous place like the middle of an erupting volcano or maybe just sitting in her kitchen. Either way she is holding her bag of tea and is giving a shout out to the company or brand of tea. The shout out normally says something along the lines of, “Oh my gosh you guys! I cannot even begin to express to you all just how AMAZING this stuff is! I have been drinking it daily for the past 2 months and I have lost over 20 pounds!”
This girl definitely may have lost 20 pounds in 2 months. She would have had to literally eat, sleep and breathe fitness and healthy food. She did not, however lose her weight (hypothetical or not) by drinking tea. The reason these teas are in such a high demand and are still in business, is not because they are the answer to all of our weight loss prayers. No, it’s not that at all. The reason these tea brands are still around is because the manufacturers know how to get people to buy them. They know exactly how to advertise and how to pull on the emotions of those who want to be anyone but themselves.
Long story short, y’all – tea has been around for years upon years. If spearmint-hibiscus tea shed body fat, don’t you think the entire world would be completely without weight problems at this point? Just give that some thought.
