Hide and go seek is a super fun game, but not when it is being played with the ingredients in your food!

Let’s face it, the food industry has changed over the last few decades and not necessarily for the better! Read more about some unappetizing ingredients that may be hiding in your food.
A lot of recipes call for “Cream of Whatever” in the ingredient list. Did you know that these soups also contain some unexpected ingredients? Take for example, cream of chicken – which is disgusting and terrible for your health, 99% fat free or not. Cream of chicken contains an ingredient that you wouldn’t dare eat independently, so why would any soup distributor or company think that it needs to be added to the final product? What is this gag worthy ingredient? CHICKEN FAT! Yes, that’s right – chicken fat. Now, granted cream of chicken honestly looks like pure chicken fat, but it’s not. It’s got other garbage ingredients that make it look gooey, jiggly and yellow. The chicken fat that is in the cream of chicken soups so many of us like to add to our dishes, is primarily added just for taste. Isn’t that gross? The actual fat from the dirtiest birds on the planet is added to your canned soup, to enhance the flavor. Maybe now you will reconsider buying cream of chicken soup to “enhance” your recipes.
This is one that actually came as a shock to me when I first came across the sneaky culprit. My husband brought home a can of beans that he had been trying to find for a few months and he was so excited. When I turned over the can to read the ingredients list, to my surprise the can of beans listed “beef fat” in the ingredients. BEEF FAT? Are you kidding me? Why on earth do we need to have fat from cattle added into our vegetables? That’s turning a food that (despite a slightly high sodium content) is super healthy and full of fiber, into a bunch of little artery cloggers. Make sure you read your cans before you purchase them. Vegetables have a common tendency to be filled with surprising additives that won’t do your health any favors.
Most parents (including myself) have a strong desire to start their kids eating the cleanest and healthiest of foods at an early age. The hope is that as they grow, their palates will adapt to better food choices rather than fast food or greasy, salty, cheesy yuckiness. Some parents don’t take it to the extreme, but still try to do what they feel is best. That being said, many parents give their children Jell-O as an alternative to cakes, pies and other candy. They truly believe that it is a much healthier alternative. But is it? It turns out Jell-O has gelatin in it! Who would have thought… In case you didn’t already know, gelatin is made up of boiled animal tendons, ligaments and bones. Basically all the icky discarded parts of the animal that aren’t used in the meat processing factories are what fill your Jell-O bowls. Still think your little cutie with a mouth full of jiggly happiness is super cute?
Not all prepackaged foods contain horror ingredients like I have given in my examples. Never the less, it’s better to be safe than disgusted. If I have said it once, I have said it a million times before – READ YOUR FOOD INGREDIENTS! Take the time to make an informed decision on what you feed yourself, your friends and your family members.
