What is your food kryptonite? Mashed potatoes? Pasta? Sadly, we can’t have our cake and eat it, too? Or can we? Check out these food substitutions that taste great, are healthier and save valuable calories!
Replace Mashed Potatoes with Mashed Cauliflower
Yep, this is the go-to side dish for almost every southern mom and grandmother. Who doesn’t love this comfort food? Although potatoes are a vegetable, they definitely by no means are the best choice for you. Potatoes are a very starchy food and basically one solid carbohydrate. Once consumed into the body, potatoes turn into sugar which are then processed and stored as fat inside the body. By the time all the cream, salt, butter, cheese, sour cream and (my least favorite) bacon are added into the mix, this “vegetable” is hardly that anymore.
So replace mashed potatoes with mashed cauliflower!
I know you are probably reading that and thinking, “Has she lost her mind or did she just make an extreme typo?” Well, the answer is no to both of those questions! You will be very shocked at the similarity in consistency and taste between mashed potatoes and mashed cauliflower. There are tons of recipes that you can find on the internet that will guide you in concocting some of the best versions of mashed cauliflower!
Replace Spaghetti Pasta with Spaghetti Squash/Zucchini Noodles
This one is one of my favorites. I am a crazy pasta fanatic. Unfortunately, pasta comes at a price after you eat a big bowl of it. White pasta is just bleached white flour that is molded into a long shape. It is nothing more than a heavy carbohydrate that will taste great with some marinara and meat sauce while you’re consuming it, but afterwards will do nothing short of leaving you feeling heavy, bloated and tired. Just like the potato, spaghetti noodles are processed in the body as sugar and stored all over as fat.
Yeah, yeah. I know.
Replacing all these delectable foods you know and love with odd vegetables that you would normally never think twice about seems radical. Spaghetti squash, however, is one of my favorite food replacement options! After it is prepared, the squash will come apart in very thin shreds that look like spaghetti noodles if they were broken apart. The zucchini noodles are especially great if you can’t quite commit to switching over to just the spaghetti squash just yet.
I suggest buying a Vegetti. This little kitchen helper will shred up your zucchini into thin strips that look very similar to long spaghetti noodles. Once they are prepared, toss them in with just a little bit of regular spaghetti noodles. The consistency is very palatable and is a great way to make the transition to spaghetti squash!
Replace Sour Cream with Plain Greek Yogurt
From quesadillas to loaded French fries, sour cream is one of the top condiments added to food for its consistency and cool, creamy taste. Sadly, sour cream is really only benefiting you with the calcium it provides and nothing else. It is a very high in fat food.
Think about it – sour cream and Greek yogurt have many similarities.
- They both have the same smell
- They have the same color and consistency
- They even taste oddly similar.
Look, my husband is the biggest hater of all things yogurt. He claims to hate the smell of it and just the thought of it being near him freaks him out. In a ploy to get him to eat better, I scraped out the sour cream container one night when I made dinner and filled the same container with plain Greek yogurt. He never even knew about my sneaky switch… Well, he at least didn’t until now…if he reads this article! Give plain Greek yogurt a shot! You are saving yourself from so much more fat and your calorie amount will be much, much lower!
Give these healthy alternatives a chance! You may be pleasantly surprised with the outcome!
