Name: Lisa Medcalf
Background: I was born in New York City but raised in Tallahassee. I graduated from Godby High School and went on to attend Tallahassee Community College and the Florida State University. I graduated with my MSW from FSU in 1992, and have been working in the mental health field for 24 years. In 1996 I married my husband, Drew, and in 2002 gave birth to our daughter. As a busy mom and wife I found myself having less time to fit exercise into my daily routine. In 2004, I became a member of Gold’s Gym and began incorporating weight training into my daily routine. What I discovered was that strength and weight training was the secret to losing the weight I had gained since my daughter’s birth. I also discovered that weight training reduced my stress levels and increased my overall energy levels. After being a member for two years, I decided to share my enthusiasm for exercise with other members by earning my certification as a Personal Trainer. In July 2004, I received my certification as a Personal Trainer and have been employed with Gold’s Gym since.
Certifications: AMFPT, Zumba Instructor
Fitness Philosophy: The first step is to just do it. As a busy mom it was difficult to find the time, but I discovered that I felt so much better after exercising. Through exercise, I was better able to handle stress and my energy levels improved. The second step is to find an exercise program you love. When I was a new member I was only doing cardio, but once I started trying strength training I discovered that I loved it. When you enjoy your fitness routine it is easier to make it a lifestyle. The third step is keeping it fresh. It is easy to get into an exercise rut, doing the same workouts over and over. It is important for more seasoned members to try new workouts and mix things up. It prevents exercise plateaus and keeps you engaged in your fitness level and excited about working out.
What drew me to the fitness world: I originally came into the fitness world as a gym member. I loved the benefits I felt from working out so much that I decided to learn more and share my knowledge with others.
What is my favorite thing about Gold’s Gym: Gold’s Gym has everything I need to be successful. They have a wide variety of equipment including cardio, free weights, and machines.
Training Specialties: I specialize in training women to incorporate exercise into their busy schedule. I also teach clients how to work out efficiently and to make good food choices. I work to educate women about the positive effects of exercise on their mood, stress, and energy levels.
