No matter how hard you work out in the gym, how often you eat the right foods and stay active throughout the day, it’s nearly impossible to reach your fitness goals if you’re stressed out. Studies show that stress can take years off your life and affect levels of hormones that interfere with weight loss and muscle growth.
Despite these findings, our mental and emotional health is continually put on the backburner. It’s crucial to find a well-rounded approach to health that includes lowering your stress levels to achieve optimal fitness.
So how do you ditch stress and start working on the mental component of fitness?
Try these three tips to help reduce your anxiety and relax more. You’ll find it easier to make changes to your body and possibly even live a bit longer! Sound good? Let’s begin!
- Reach out: No matter how shy or private you might be, human beings are meant to connect and feel understood. Even if there’s just one person whom you can trust, express what you’re stressing about. It’s one of the most powerful therapeutic processes available to you. Let someone in, and never be afraid to ask for help.
- Simplify: Is there something you can say no to? Can you delegate more? Try taking at least a few minutes each day to pause in the moment. Stop trying to get a million things done. Activities such as yoga, meditation, journaling and taking a bath are fantastic to help you simplify and destress.
- Give: Often we can ditch stress by giving of our time and letting someone know they’re loved. Getting outside of our own thoughts and regular routine helps us de-stress almost instanteously, makes us happier and helps someone else feel better. It’s a rewarding action for the person receiving the gift and for you as well!
