You’re probably thinking, “Water Aerobics? Isn’t water aerobics for people who want an easy and light workout?” while the image of your grandma wearing a flowered swim cap comes to mind.
But think again! Gold’s Gym Northwest offers several different fitness programs designed to use water in order to make your workout more challenging. Water offers 12 times the resistance of air! Resistance equals greater calories burned and more muscle built (burn anywhere from 300 up to 600 calories in an hour).
Resistance offers you more than just making you work harder to move, but it also lets you work both sides of your muscle group simultaneously. When you lift weights, you do an arm curl to work your biceps and then separately a kick back to work your triceps; but in the water, an arm curl works both your biceps and triceps simultaneously! One movement, greater benefit because of resistance.
A water workout can be a gentle workout, but it does not have to be! Water lets you use buoyancy to lessen the impact on your joints and bones. However buoyancy can also help you find a larger range of motion than you can often find outside the pool: jump higher, reach wider, contract tighter and extend longer!
Not to mention that water helps to cool your body and keep your heartrate lower, feel like you sweat less (even though you’re still sweating plenty, bring water!) and remove that mental wall to pushing yourself further.
Anyone of any age, health, fitness level or swimming ability (no ability required) can find a program that offers you a workout to challenge:
