Personal Fitness Background
On a personal basis, I really didn’t exercise regularly until I attended Jazzercise classes with a friend back in high school. I thought teaching those kind of classes would be fun. I got a job as an aerobics instructor in 1985, and exercise has been a part of my life ever since. I find that it helps me to have a fitness goal, and because of that, I am proud to say that I have completed a marathon and a sprint triathlon.
My personal training journey really began when I started teaching group fitness in 1985 – back in the leotards and tights days. Thank goodness that fashion statement has not returned. Bath then, I assisted clients with learning the various weight machines at the fitness center where I was employed in addition to teaching aerobics classes. While serving in the Tennessee Army National Guard, I attended the Master Fitness Trainer program and earned my personal trainer certification. I continue to seek out opportunities to learn and inspire others to make exercise a part of their daily life.
I believe it is important to move. If you want to live your life with quality and the ability to experience things, you have to keep your body mobile and strong. That involves all the areas of fitness from cardiovascular health to muscular strength and endurance to body composition to flexibility. Nutrition and rest are extremely important too. Find things you enjoy, make goals and do what you need to do to make exercise a part of your life, not just a temporary thing. If you want to make improvements, you have to challenge yourself. Don’t get stuck doing the same things over and over again – variety is key. Your trainer should be able to tell you why you do certain exercises – not just how. I hope to educate you and inspire you to make the most of what God gave you.
I’ve been at Gold’s Gym in Rainbow City since it opened in December 1996. Prior to that I worked in various fitness centers in Anniston, Jasper, Nashville, TN and Murfreesboro, TN dating back to 1985.
