- Movement with a purpose
Many people have spent years moving their bodies before thinking about the movement, which often results in incorrect positioning and/or injury. As a certified Pilates Equipment and Mat Instructor, I have learned the importance of teaching people to move first with their mind, then their body to ensure correct alignment in posture and movement. Now as a Personal Trainer, I can take the instruction of proper alignment and movement beyond the class and studio and personally help clients learn this important concept as well. To further teach the movement process, I often tap into my background in physics, as I have a degree in Meteorology. Teaching clients the physics of movement in simple terms helps them “see” the mechanics and forces their bodies take on daily and how much their bodies are capable of achieving.
What I teach my clients has roots in a personal journey in life with much pain. As a teen I suffered a sever lower back injury that was later worsened in my twenties, then should and neck injuries from skiing and mountain biking. Add to that a lifetime of poor posture and improper movement, I was sure to be bound for surgery soon. In 2000, I was introduced to Pilates and soon realized how one’s core is the foundation for stability and is where all body movement emanates. Persistence and a little bit of stubbornness has kept me surgery free and intrigued me to the extent of teaching others with a confidence that, with work and dedication, many can enjoy a body that moves well and feels healthy.
