Amanda lost 24 pounds, 6.5 inches and 4.8% body fat!
“I’ve often heard the idea, ‘the first step to acknowledging you have a problem.’ For me, someone who is sort of acutely self-aware, that was never an issue. When I joined Gold’s Gym Norton I knew I was indulging in everything delicious and wasn’t exercising. But in my mind I had a good reason: I had just had a baby and I was exhausted and I’m a firm believer in self reward.
Part of the reason I had gotten to the point of having gained so much weight was that after struggling to get and stay pregnant, I had just received the blessing of two babies. The difficulty, ‘miracle’ pregnancies required bed rest with no vigorous exercise and I gained 90 pounds with each one. Getting back in shape felt frivolous and less of a priority than my newborn and his sibling. That was until I reminded myself that the high blood pressure, the depression would all get better if I squeezed in a workout when I could.
Following my first pregnancy I was able to lose most of the weight (75 pounds) in a year doing P90x and Yoga videos while baby slept. The second time around it was much harder. I would jog and take spin classes and this allowed me to lose 40 pounds but there was still more to go.
I met with the only trainer I wanted to work with, Brian Diercksen. After seeing him in the gym with 3 small children, I knew I needed someone who could relate to my challenges and lifestyle. I signed myself and my husband up for sessions. I told Brian, ‘we used to be athletes. We didn’t always look like this. We haven’t slept in 4 years.’
The day I took the challenge I was trying to tap into my competitive side of me. I needed the accountability in my diet. We met 3 times per week and switched from weight training to TRX. That seemed to really strengthen me and it also got my body to remember what feeling strong feels like.
That was the challenge that made the difference, and all that exercising started to show. I also became addicted to at least one class daily (Pump with Maddy is my favorite) and then jogging or Yoga at home with my boys. That way we are all energized, or getting fresh air, but mommy has still had her ‘me time.’”

Gary made some huge achievements in losing 39 pounds, over 10% body fat and 14.5 inches!
“Walking by the Golds Gym Challenge banner last year peaked my interest, but to no avail. This year was different story. After seeing how well the previous gym challenge members were able to improve their health and conditioning, I had to give it a try. The before and after pictures were nothing less than inspiring.
My body weight had been reaching new heights and for a few consecutive years I was really starting to pay the price. Backaches, sore feet and a growing waist line were every day reminders of a need to make a change. The 12 week challenge was the change I needed.
I walked over to the sign up table more than once but didn’t put pen to paper. Once day, while I was once again looking at the photos of former competitors, Barbara O’Donnell one of the Golds Gyms trainers, approached me and gave me extra encouragement that was needed to sign on the dotted line. Thank you Barbara! Barbara asked me what my goals were, and she suggested fitness instructor David Lee’s, to help me through the challenge.
My 12 week challenge consisted of a combination of weight lifting and cardio as instructed by David Lee’s. I met with David a couple of times a week, and probably asked him a million questions in regards to nutrition, weight loss and gaining muscle. Dave was always more than willing to give me the advice and help that I needed. I can’t thank him enough for all the motivation and support throughout the 12 week challenge and even now. All the staff at the gym was eager to give me assistance and guidance whenever I spoke with them.
I also would like to thank my son and work out partner Ethan, who helped me tremendously, and made sure I took my vitamins and protein drinks regularly. On days when I needed a little extra encouragement to head to the gym, he would already have the car running in the driveway and ready to go.
So all said and done, I lost a total of 39lbs and a bunch of fat and inches of my body and my strength increased quite a bit. I feel great and I’m extremely glad I became a member of Gold’s Gym Norton! Thank you, and Onwards and Upwards.”

Mike exceeded expectations by losing 20.5 pounds, 12 inches, and 8% body fat!
“In January of this year I was approaching my 50th birthday. When I learned about the Gold’s 12 week challenge, I decided that now was a great opportunity to try and dial back the clock and get myself in much better shape than the shape I was in. I have always worked out, but never had a purpose, a focus or proper form and technique. In fact, I suffered a degenerative herniated disk in 2006 requiring surgery on my lumbar spine. And it slowed my fitness regime down dramatically.
In July of 2011, I ruptured a second disk in my cervical spine, while doing yard work. The second disk injury forced me to slow my workouts down even more significant and ultimately, left me out of shape without the motivation I historically had. The Challenge and my Gold’s Gym Trainer, David Lees, were the two main motivating factors that pushed me to move beyond my comfort zone and get me focused on the plan, proper form and a better workout program.
Despite my prior injuries, I wanted to approach my fitness from a different angle: change my diet, include effective cardio exercise in my training and be willing to modify my approach to weight training and breaking my muscle groups in a much different manner. The results have been amazing. I’ve lost over 6 inches in my mid-section, dropped my weight by 21 pounds and I’ve reduced my body fat by 8% in just 12 weeks. I have truly transformed my body, my life style and my outlook on my life. I have never been in better shape in my life and my spin and core have never felt stronger.
This challenge has given me the confidence to push myself even further. I’ve signed up for the NPC men’s physique competition in Boston and I plan to continue to recoup my body in a way that will be competition worthy.
I truly cannot thank the Gold’s Gym staff, the management and my trainer enough for all of the support, guidance and encouragement they have given me through this process. It’s been an amazing journey and I’m extremely grateful for the transformation. It’s been a great 50th birthday gift to myself.”

Leona worked hard to lose 32 pounds, 23.5 inches and 8.5% body fat!
“I started this challenge defeated and depressed. I was at an all-time low emotionally, physically and spiritually thanks to a traumatic and devastating 2013. I knew I had gained weight but I was in denial. When the pictures and measurements were taken on day 1, realization kicked in and I went home crying. I knew the challenge was exactly what I need.
My first workout on my journey was literally on day 1 of the Gold’s Gym Challenge so this is truly is a transformation in 12 weeks. As I began, I was sore every single day for the first 6 weeks. I was determined to get the weight off but I realized I was missing a very important factor, weights. I hired a personal trainer, Brian Dierckson, and told him all of my medical issues. I had a shoulder injury preventing me from lifting weights over my head. I was coming off of two sprained ankles and I was in in physical therapy twice a week for a straining my lumbar and thoracic back muscles which meant no deadlifts, heavy lifting or squats. Brian said, “don’t worry, we will do what we can, no excuses.” I said “OK, no excuses!!! I was sore for the next 6 weeks but it was worth every minute of pain! I am so proud of what I accomplished with all of my handicaps and I want others to know they can do it too!
I have met so many people who have encouraged me along the way and I can’t possibly thank them all enough. To Jim and Vivian, and the other Spin instructors; thank you for beating my legs up! To Maddy and Michelle; thanks for Combat, Piloxing and your friendships. I now have calves and abs instead of cankles and flab!! (Seriously, my calves burned!!) MY very special thank you to Brian, my trainer. Every day I came in, you said “Hi” even though I didn’t hire you yet. You took the time to sit with me (even 5 minutes) and talk about my workouts. You always gave me inspiration even on those days I had none. Your encouraging words and your patience were key factors in my life changing adventure. I am proud to call you my friend. TO Fraser and Kris; thanks for having such great knowledgeable staff! Every single one of your employees gave sound advice and supported me through this journey.”
