When I first came to the area in August 2010, I was a staggering 230 pounds at only 5’7”. I was obese and depressed having just finished graduate school and moving away from friends to a place where I didn’t know anyone. On the very first day starting my career as a structural engineer someone in the office whom I’d just met made a passing comment that I might be “too big for field work.”
Like most people I had attempted to exercise and eat cleanly before, but was never able to maintain compliance over prolonged periods of time. I decided hiring a personal trainer may help me get started and more importantly, to stick with it. So I went to my local gym to enlist the services of a trainer, but fortunately for me got way more than that in Ms. Brandi Rafield. Not only a personal trainer, but a friend and one of the kindest, most positive, and inspirational people I’ve ever met.
After getting a feel for who I was, Brandi got me started by creating tailored exercise and nutrition plans. Having never lifted weights, I wasn’t really comfortable in the gym setting and the anxiety of looking foolish or hurting myself had always constrained me to the treadmill. Brandi helped me overcome this, showing me a wide array of exercises (from bodyweight and machine exercises to TRX and free weights) while monitoring my form to minimize risk of injury.
Steadily over the course of 2-3 years, with a progressively improving diet, exercise, and Brandi’s motivation I managed to lose 93 pounds and have drastically altered the path of my health – and ultimately, life. I went from not being able to run a mile or ever lifting weights to running miles in under 7 minutes and being able to safely deadlift more than twice my weight. And even though this type of dedication requires significant personal effort and accountability, Brandi’s unrelenting willingness to help is what got me to a place where that effort was even possible.

I wanted to tell you how much I love your gym! I come in most mornings during the week and am greeted by Jean and Ed. They always seem happy to see me and greet me by name. They are a pleasant start to my workout! The gym is very clean and well kept. You are always updating equipment and adding new classes. There is something for everyone!
I also want to point out two of your personal trainers who are OUTSTANDING in my opinion. One is Val Alezard. I started training in a small group with Val last year. She helped me tremendously! She encouraged me to walk and to start to run for short time frames. At first I could only run for 30 seconds and it seemed like forever! She worked with me and made running fun with different drills and assignments for me to work on. She always knew how to set an attainable goal for me and kept raising the bar! Last September I completed my first HALF MARATHON! And I completed it in my goal time! I never would have been able to do it without her help and encouragement! As an added bonus I also lost 70 pounds in the process!
This year I joined the Runner’s High group to improve my 5k time. Val had runners of various levels and she handled them all individually and yet you felt part of a team. Everyone encouraged each other to reach their goals! It’s a great class!
The other personal trainer who I think is OUTSTANDING is Fran Martin. He is training me with Heavy bag Kick boxing. I LOVE IT! It is a great workout for the whole body! He is awesome as a trainer! He keeps me interested and is always challenging me. He is very encouraging. If he is in between classes or personal training appointments and he sees you he will come over and ask how your workout is going and if you have any questions. Or he will give you a quick pointer on how you can maximize on your workout by tweaking here or there. He does this for me and I have seen him helping others as well. He is very personable and tailors the workout to my goals. He is doing a great job motivating me!
