Originally from New England, moved to the DMV area to work as a consultant for IBM. Even though I have recently changed jobs and am now working for the Federal Housing Finance Agency as a Policy Analyst, my real passion is teaching Zumba Fitness classes in my community. Having taken dance as a child and always involved in sports and music activities in school, putting the elements together has been a dream come true! While I didn’t start out teaching Zumba Fitness classes, I was a student at various gyms in the DMV area. Zumba gave me a sense of community, confidence in my body, and improved my overall level of fitness; as well as being an incredible stress reliever. It wasn’t until one of my former Zumba instructors and mentors encouraged me to get licensed to teach, did I even consider the possibility of sharing my love for dance fitness with others. However, the minute the licensing class started, a lightbulb went off in my head and I knew I had to do this. I fell in love with Zumba Fitness, but more importantly I fell in love with teaching. Four years later I feel the same way. There is nothing more rewarding than being able to contribute to another individual’s fitness journey in even the smallest capacity; to watch the joy, confidence, and fitness levels improve in their lives, in a similar way that it had been for you. Besides being a fun, motivating, and stress relieving workout, being a part of the Group X Instructor community is such a powerful and inspiring way to have fun, meet new people, and give back to your community members.

What led you to group fitness? After moving to the DMV 10 years ago straight out of college, I started going to the gym a lot to stay healthy but also to meet new friends. Within a few months, I became an avid group fitness class member, particularly in Zumba, Yoga, and Pilates. Then one day a friend talked me into getting licensed to teach Zumba. At first I thought I would just go along for the fun of it, since I loved to dance, but had no intention of teaching. However, the minute the instructor class started, I knew I had stumbled into another world. The rest is history…4 years and counting.
How do you spend your time outside of the gym? Spending time with friends and family; movies; concerts; wine tasting; and travelling
Some advice for our GGX class members: Keep an open mind and stay positive. Try to avoid the words “can’t” and “won’t”. You will never know how far you can go personally, be it physically and/or emotionally, until you try.
