In Star Wars, many members of the dark side were once good. Sometimes what seems good just goes wrong if we’re not paying attention. While not everyone has the luxury of an oversized furry side-kick to pull them out of sticky situations (unless I just described your trainer), here’s a few side-kick like health benefits to keep you on track and out of enemy territory (or anywhere near a giant talking slug.)
7 Health Benefits That You Need To Double-Check
1) Yoga (Yoda’s athletic cousin?)
Just about anywhere you go you’ll hear about yoga benefits, but it’s only one side of the fitness spectrum. For a well-rounded regimen, your body needs some cardio and bursts of strength, as well as the slow and controlled strength that Yoga builds.
2) Vitamin Waters
Many flavored waters these days are enhanced with b6 or b12, but they’re often also riddled with sugar. Keep an eye on those labels and serving sizes, and make sure you’re not getting tricked into more sugar than you’ve bargained for.
On its own, it won’t give your body all it needs. It’s great to keep your heart healthy and pumping, but your muscles are going to need some targeted training, or they may begin to break down from lack of specific use and overall exhaustion.
Repeating the same movement over and over won’t give you a balanced and functional core. Pilates or yoga benefits are a great addition to any ab-work schedule, bringing balanced strength to the core, not just to one part of a muscle group.
5) Non-Fat & Low-Fat Foods
These days we’re so desperate to get slim quick that we often gloss over the fine print. But if you check those labels you see that what you’re trading in fat you’re gaining in preservatives or artificial additives that will most likely still end up as fat (in one form or another).
6) Bottled Water
In an effort to avoid the chemicals in tap water many people pick up bottled water instead. Sadly, many of the plastic bottles used have chemicals in the plastic that eventually break down into the water, so be careful of how long that bottle hangs around before you drink it.
7) Protein Bars
The body-builders favorite go-to when they’re on-the-go. But not so fast, Skywalker. Do a little research to see how much sugar your favorite protein bar has, and whether the protein used is actually good quality. If it’s something you’re regularly putting into your body it better not have filler ingredients that will harm your body in the long run.
All of these health benefits we find on our planet have a good side and a dark side. With a little help from the force (your brain-thing) you’ll be able to identify how to use it for good, instead of the side that wants to stick you in a black suffocating suite with a creepy breathing device. And you know your girlfriend won’t be able to recognize your voice in that thing, so steer clear. May the brain-thing be with you!
