You may think you’re accomplishing a lot by those daily jogs, but getting real results in your workout is a two-way street. On one side of the street is fitness; on the other side is fuel (aka, the foods you’re putting in your body.) And it’s probably safe to say that strolling up and down the sidewalks on either side are all the unhealthy foods you should be avoiding. Think of them as hitchhikers that could make you drive miles and miles out of your way, or worse, steal your wallet and stab you in the leg with the nearest ballpoint pen. Yeah. Dangerous. Don’t pick up hitchhikers!- or the foods that want to hijack your fitness goals! Here are five unhealthy food hitchhikers that you need to get real good at passing up while heading down the road to your healthy balanced lifestyle.
Avoid These Five Unhealthy Foods at All Costs
1) Fast Food
This should be a no-brainer. Fast food is not only loaded with processed ingredients and preservatives, but it’s also usually cooked in loads of grease. Bad all around. Take it a step further and try to eat out as little as possible. Many restaurants buy cheap ingredients in bulk, so their dishes will include a lot of preservatives and artificial fillers that your body will ultimately suffer from.
He’s cool, he’s bubbly, he’s charming- he’s death! Well, not instant death. But that’s the thing; most of these unhealthy foods are a slow death in disguise (remember your leg bleeding out from the ballpoint pen wound? Hitchhikers!) Soda, in particular, is packed with sugar, chemicals, and high-fructose corn syrup. Walk passed it.
3) Baked Goods
Oh they’re so fluffy and delicious! Unfortunately, they’re packed with white flour and sugar. Don’t stop to pick them up. They’ll derail all of your efforts in a heartbeat.
4) Cereals & Yogurts
Many kinds of cereal and yogurts are marketed as healthy, but truth is most of them are processed and full of sugar. If you look at the label, you’ll be shocked at the amount of sugar that is usually packed in one little serving. Don’t believe the marketing, check the ingredients yourself before you toss something into your grocery basket.
5) Processed Meat
Sadly, deli meat is usually highly processed and packed with more than just meat. What? Is it not just meat in my meat? Nope. Often processed meats include a variety of other dangerous additives, including sodium nitrates, which have been linked to cancer. Oh, heck no.
You may think you’re too busy to prepare meals, but there are plenty of easy and healthy foods you can prepare at home and take with you throughout the day. Packing healthy snacks will also help curb your appetite so you won’t get tempted to pick up that really attractive hitchhiker. She may look appealing from a distance, but up close she’s bad news. Eat those almonds, and drive on by.
