Getting deep into healthy habits isn’t the easiest thing to do, but it always starts with the right knowledge. Many of us weren’t raised with the simple facts of health and nutrition. Our parents took us out for fast food after ball games or packed our lunches with candy and Lunchables. We just didn’t know that many of those foods had dangerous additives. Don’t worry; you don’t have to go throw out your collection of McDonald’s Happy Meal toys (Beanie babies anyone?), but you do need to start taking little steps towards a healthier lifestyle. Here are a few foundational nutrition facts and healthy living tips to set you off.
Five Important Health and Nutrition Facts
1. Stay Active
You don’t have to jump straight into a CrossFit class to get healthy. Start with just getting in 15-20 minutes of movement each day and go from there. Choose one exercise that you enjoy (walking, weights, treadmill, Zumba) and build up.
2. Check Labels
Believe it or not, a lot of what is called “food” these days are actually filled with things that should never be consumed. Chemicals, colorings, artificial preservatives, and additives- all things that harm our bodies. Check the labels on the food you’re purchasing. If you don’t recognize the ingredients, (or they’re in a list as long as your arm and in an alien language) run away. Organic foods or foods that have very little added to them are the best way to go.
3. Prepare Meals
When you’re eating out, you just don’t know what is going on in that kitchen. You don’t usually get a look at all the ingredients the restaurants use, which means they can add cheap ingredients or unhealthy ingredients without your knowledge. One of the best habits you could ever adopt is preparing your own meals at home, and packing healthy snacks.
4. Increase Veggies
Most people only eat a fraction of the vegetables their bodies need. One of the top nutrition facts you could implement is to make sure each meal is halfway composed of vegetables. Also, consider packing some fresh fruit or veggies to curb your cravings throughout the day instead of relying on sugary granola bars or candy.
5. Drink Water
It’s so simple, yet so vital. Water hydrates your body, clears out toxins, and helps curb your appetite for unhealthy treats. If you cut out soda or sugary juices and replace them with ample amounts of water throughout your day, you’ll see a drastic change in your health.
These healthy tips and nutrition facts will help you in many ways. You’ll find stubborn pounds may drop off, more energy throughout the day, and perhaps even changes in your complexion. Many ailments and cosmetic issues we face can easily be cleared up with basic nutritional facts if we just give them some time. If you stick with it, you’ll see the results of a new healthy internal ecosystem- a foundation you can build on and thrive in for years to come. (Oh, and on second thought, ditch the beanie babies. It’s time to let go.)
