We are well past New Year’s resolutions, so you may find your motivation to lose weight waxing and waning. For some of us, this motivation might be MIA.
But this is totally normal. Your motivation to lose weight will experience peaks and valleys with time; the key is to not completely lose heart and fall off track when your motivation isn’t as high. If you have a regular routine and are learning some new healthy skills, you don’t have to panic when motivation starts to dip. Nonetheless, maintaining a certain level of motivation will help you be more successful in the long run.
3 Quick Tips to Help You Stay Motivated This Year
- Find other success: Sometimes all that you need to stay motivated is to check something off your list. If you clean out your closet, pay off a credit card, finish a remodeling project, etc., you’ll feel a sense of accomplishment and, most importantly, a boost in self-confidence. This boost can bleed over into your motivation to lose weight and get the ball rolling again.
- Stay off social media: For some, looking at pictures of magazine-worthy models and six-pack abs can inspire us to stay motivated. But for the rest of us, these images can wreak havoc on our motivational levels and confidence. You can stay motivated by looking at pictures of a healthier version of yourself from the past or reading about transformations of people similar to yourself. Research also has shown promising benefits from posting your own transformation photos on social media to keep you accountable.
- Ditch the daily weigh-ins: Far too many of us get caught up in the numbers and become completely discouraged by checking our weight too often. Rely on pictures and tape measurements a few weeks apart or even once a month to help you stay motivated and recognize how you’re truly changing.
