There seem to be as many gyms today as there are Starbucks and new exercise classes popping up all over the place. Bottom line: You have plenty of options. So with so many choices available, how do you find the right exercise program? It can get confusing! Let’s go over some simple tips to help sort out what’s right for you.
- Choose fun over necessity: I believe you’ll stick to an exercise program and experience greater results if you choose to have fun. Pick something that excites you and makes you escape from everyday stressors—possibly even laugh out loud. A workout doesn’t always have to be a chore.
- Cross-train: Pick more than one type of workout. Keep it fresh. Your body gets bored and hits a plateau. It’s important even if you’re a one-sport athlete to participate in multiple types of fitness activities so you can avoid injuries and “play longer.”
- Know your personality: Are you social? Pick a group exercise class full of energizing people. Do you like to get outside? Sign up for an obstacle race or boot camp. Love competition? Go race or get involved in a fitness competition. Are you a bit apprehensive or shy? It might be time to get a personal trainer to boost your confidence and knowledge when navigating the gym.
Any exercise program can be a smart choice, because you’re choosing to be active. But if you want long-term success and the highest probability of achieving your goals, pick an exercise program just for you. Know your personality, switch it up and opt to have some fun!
