WHERE: San Diego
WHY: Chalk it up to the sunny climate, an abundance of water sports or the fact that the state's governor is a former bodybuilder, but the Golden State makes the list twice. Burn off that In-N-Out burger in Balboa Park (named after the explorer, not the boxer), which offers a 38,000-square-foot multipurpose gymnasium with badminton and volleyball, a golf complex with beautiful views of downtown, a tennis club and hiking and biking trails, not to mention lawn bowling (ask a member of the San Diego Lawn Bowling Club for a lesson). Also located in the park is the San Diego Zoo, which spans 100 acres and includes more than 4,000 animals. Once you've had your fill of lions, tigers and bears (oh, my!), explore the 70 miles of coastline via a bike, a surfboard, skates or a sailboat. Mission Bay has relatively calm waters and an abundance of activities (including a Sea World), so it's a great choice for fitness-minded families.
