Are you over 50 and feeling out of shape? Before you head to the gym, be sure to follow these tips from gerontology expert, Dr. Alexis Abramson.
Consult Your Doctor: Anyone first starting to workout should always consult their personal physician first to determine what restrictions, if any, should be placed on their exercise program. With various diagnoses including arthritis, spinal conditions, and neurological disorders, it is also helpful to have a physical therapist involved in the development and monitoring of your exercise program.
Proceed with Caution: Anyone beginning an exercise regimen should begin slowly. Allow yourself to get used to the strain of physical activity. As your body adjusts, you'll be able to increase the duration and intensity of your program. Remember, you can achieve your fitness goals with moderate-intensity exercise, you do not need to overexert yourself. If you feel any discomfort, stop exercising immediately and consult your doctor.
Choose the Right Trainer: Working with a certified personal trainer allows you to achieve results quickly, safely and more effectively than working out on your own. Personal training is a great tool to maximize your results and minimize the risk of injury. Your trainer will design a personalized program based on your specific fitness goals and the activities you enjoy.
Set Fitness Goals: Discuss your health and fitness goals with your trainer so that he/she can design a routine that will help you maximize your effort towards achieving those goals.
