A bill has been introduced
to the NJ Senate that would effectively shut down all personal training and
group exercise in the state of
New
Jersey. At
Gold’s Gym Lawrenceville, we believe in proper certification for all of our
instructors and trainers, and each of our staff members has the educational
background to safely and effectively train our clients. In fact, the majority of our staff exceeds
the standards set for personal trainers and group exercise instructors. Unfortunately, the bill that is before the
senate is so prohibitive; virtually all of the personal trainers and group
exercise instructors in the state would have to discontinue their chosen
professions, and we would not be able to offer the same types of classes and
instruction that we do now.
IHRSA
(International Health, Racquet, and SportsClub Association), the fitness
industry’s governing body, has had an ongoing dialogue with Senator Sarlo, the
sponsor of the bill, and has previewed an amended version of Senate Bill 2164,
which contains multiple provisions that would serve to severely hinder the
personal training, group exercise and health club industry.
In May, the New Jersey Coalition of Fitness Professionals and IHRSA met with
Senator Sarlo to express concerns that the bill would potentially be so
burdensome on personal trainers and group exercise instructors that the
industry would effectively be shut down should the bill pass. Despite
addressing some of the concerns, the amended certification bill still
ultimately has the same paralyzing effect on the industry as the original
version.

place extreme certification requirements that would effectively end personal
training and group exercise in
New
Jersey.
