INSPIRATIONAL MEMBER MANAGING DISEASE AND PAIN
THROUGH GROUP FITNESS
Tanya Ryan-Penna Eases Parkinson’s Symptoms through Group Exercise (Featured above)
Tanya is an inspiration to everyone from our trainers and staff to other members who watch her dedication to fitness and see how it has enabled her to live a fuller, more complete life in spite of the challenges she faces with Parkinson’s Disease.
“Exercise really makes a difference in my life. When I first started after my diagnosis three years ago, I couldn’t stand on one foot. My left side is most affected and the best description is that it’s paralyzed and it hurts sometimes”. She says that when she works out, she can do more.
“Working out helps my balance and my strength and makes everyday chores easier,” says Tanya. She says that she likes group fitness classes the best because it’s like an appointment where you get to workout with friends. “I like getting to know the people in the class and those relationships keep you motivated. When you have challenges like I do, it’s easy to make excuses no to go, but the classes and the great people that you meet in the classes help. It makes the time go by faster, and we push each other to work a little harder. Hearing that we have four more repetitions, three more and so on is motivating.”
For Tanya, starting in fitness and finding a gym was intimidating at first, but she says the people at Gold’s Gym Fairport are always so positive. “It was a positive experience right off the bat and I’ve made wonderful relationships there,” she says.
“When I walked into Gold’s, the staff was so welcoming, not a hard sell. They didn’t call or pester me to join. In fact they told me that even if I didn’t commit to a membership that they’d show me what exercises that would help. I feel very fortunate.”

The Taste of GGX launch event is open to the public and will showcase 15-minute samples of each of the class formats for anyone interested in trying out a new class. It will also host local fitness vendors with freebies from attire to nutrition, including Project Lean Nation, Fitsmo, The Vitamin Shoppe and Full Circle Massage and Wellness.
