Be careful with your food choices after a workout. Exercise not only burns calories, but also revs up your metabolism for hours afterwards (also known as the “after burn” effect). For some individuals, the body’s natural response is to intensify appetite in an attempt to match the increase in metabolism and caloric expenditure. So when choosing your meal or snack after a workout, USE YOUR HEAD! Choose nourishing foods that will fuel recovery and enhance your next workout. Plan what you will eat and be sure that it is appropriate for the intensity and duration of your workout. In other words, if you ran 3 miles (which burns about 300 calories), don’t refuel with a cheeseburger, which contains twice the calories you burned!
