You know those dreams you have as a kid where you have fallen asleep in class and your teacher yells your name until you wake up? When they finally see you come back to reality, they ask you to finish reading where your classmate left off; knowing good and well that you won’t be able to do that. So embarrassing! It’s a dream and a reality for some. I’ll be the first to admit I had that awkward situation happen plenty of times growing up – in the dream world and the real world.
As adults, we still worry about this same kind of embarrassment happening to us. It’s actually one of the more common reasons people avoid taking Group Fitness classes altogether. They don’t want to suffer the humiliation of being the one who is “made an example of” during class. Those people can be real jerks. Don’t get me wrong; I know there are many Group Fitness Instructors that mean no harm when they put their focus on a certain individual. Most of the time, they are trying to make you feel more comfortable and like you are a part of the whole group. However, some people don’t like the attention and there is NOTHING wrong with that! Some like to be the center of attention and some like to pretend they have an invisible super power and can’t be seen. Below, I have listed some reasons why you should never be the one in the back row of a Group Fitness class. The reasons may surprise you!
1. You are more likely to hurt yourself
If you are in the very back row of a Group Fitness class, chances are you are one of two kinds of people. 1. You are new to class and don’t want to be noticed. 2. You want to be able to skip out 5 minutes early while everyone does the cool down portion of class. By being a new class taker, you are going to do some things that aren’t proper form, anatomically accurate, and look silly. It’s inevitable! It isn’t something to be ashamed of. Everyone is new at everything at one point or another, right? Don’t stay in the back and think you are doing yourself a favor. Most people who choose to stay in the back of class are focusing on the other people in front of them or those surrounding them. What they really need to be focused on is the instructor on stage. The GF Instructor is educated on proper form and technique. They are trained to maximize your fitness results and to assist if you have a physical limitation that will require an alternative movement. If you are busy looking over at Sally Squatter to your left and depending on her for your proper form example, you are really taking a risk. What you may not know about Ol’ Sally Squatter is that she does her squats and lunges ALL wrong! If you follow what Sally is doing, you could possibly cause permanent damage to your body. Tell Sally to step aside and you take a spot in front of her. Get to where you have a direct line of vision to the GF Instructor. This will allow you to make the most out of your class experience each and every single time!
2. Chances are, you’ll never come back
I took a poll one time and asked some of our members about their experiences during their time at different gyms. Come to find out, most people that try Group Fitness classes don’t come back to them. But why? It’s because they feel like they don’t belong or convince themselves they are an outcast in this group of people that are already in groove with each other. They falsely believe this group doesn’t want anything to do with “newcomers”. It’s true, Group Fitness takers are like a little community. No, they are really more of a family unit. Not only are they involved with each other when it comes to things that are gym and fitness related, but they also seem to really care about each other personally. These GF takers are so close, because 1-3 times a week they spend an hour or more with each other. They get to know each other through class interaction. By hiding in the back of the class, fingers reach of the door, you are really sacrificing some great potential – potential for new friends, potential for support, potential for advice and guidance from those going through their own fitness journey. Why would you want to miss out on such an awesome opportunity?
