Did you know that by the year 2050, 1 in every 3 adults will have one form or another of diabetes? It may seem a little dramatic for a statistic, but it’s not hard to comprehend. I’ve mentioned in previous articles how the obesity rate in children is skyrocketing each day. Put the future diabetic statistic and the childhood obesity rate together and what do you have? You have your children being what makes up that 2050 statistic. Pretty mind blowing, right? Or is it…
Studies have shown that 72% of what a child eats in a day is determined by the primary preparer and purchaser of their foods. What kind of path are you laying down for your child? Today I want to help shed some light on how you can be the saving grace for your child. The decisions that you make now can predict the future of your child, including the food choices they will make as adults.
Lead by Example
There isn’t one kid in the world who isn’t curious. It’s in their nature as a growing human, to want to learn, understand and experience things. That being said, you may wonder why your child is always refusing to eat the healthy food you prepare them or drink the water you have poured. Well, normally the main culprit of this struggle is….you. If you give your child a glass of water, but you are across the table each night drinking some kind of soda or juice drink, your child is bound to take an interest in what you have and want it for themselves. You can’t hand your kid a plate of celery and peanut butter, yet be confused when they want the bag of Doritos in your lap instead. Do you see where I’m going here? Live the life that you want for your kids. The life that they live now and in the future is a direct replica of what they see from you during childhood. Make healthy decisions for yourself and you are more likely to have a child that grows into a young adult who will make good food choices for themselves.
Set the Scene
Like I mentioned earlier, the person who provides the majority of the food for children in the home, is responsible for about 72% of the nutrients they are receiving. As a parent, you can choose one of two routes: You can be the parent who leaves a cookie jar in the middle of the kitchen counter for their kid to come by and grab from throughout the day when they are hungry. Or you can be the parent who leaves a fruit bowl out on the counter that is piled high with all different colors or various fruits to be chosen from. Again, what your child learns in his or her home environment, they will carry out with them into the world. I promise that you will feel much more confident about the choices your child makes – in terms of what they eat – when they aren’t with you, if you set a healthy scene for them at home.
Be Selective When Eating Out
If you are a family that is always on the move or you just don’t particularly like to cook, I understand. That doesn’t mean that you have to sacrifice your family’s health. Make choices that will impact your children now and also better prepare them for future decisions about food. Take them to places that have a huge salad bar and allow them to create their own salad. Let your kids be hands on with healthy food. Don’t take them to the greasy, boring pizza buffet. Not only is it a bad for their health, but it doesn’t stimulate their mental growth.
What do you think? Are there changes you need to make in your household? What you teach your child now, will forever stick with them. Starting as young as you possibly can, teach your children that making healthy food choices doesn’t have to mean bland, boring or gross. Lead by example and your children are bound to follow.
