Carbs are friends, not foes. Learn how to lose your fear of carbs and enjoy them healthfully.
If you are trying to watch your carb intake, do you really even know why you are “watching” it. For most people, it’s only because they have heard too much about “scary” carbs. But why are they considered so “scary”? Is there really even a legitimate reason that people have grown to believe carbs are the enemy? The most likely answer is the simple fact that they have heard they shouldn’t eat carbs. No real reason; people just are following the lead.
I want to explain why carbs aren’t your enemy and how they are actually something you need in your diet. I also want to shed a little bit of light on the difference between a good and a bad carb. Being informed is an absolute necessity, especially when it comes to your health and eating habits.
GOOD VS. BAD CARBS
No, I don’t mean good tasting carbs versus bad tasting carbs. The phrase “good carb” is used to describe a carbohydrate that is good for your health and contains nutritional value that your body needs. When you hear someone make reference to a “bad carb” they are implying that the carb is not a carbohydrate that the body needs to be consuming. A bad carb is primarily made up of processed foods or white starches. Ex.- Potatoes, white pasta, white rice, chips, etc.
CARBS CAN BE FOUND IN SURPRISING PLACES
Carbohydrates are a necessity for our bodies. I bet I can surprise you with a carb fact – let’s see! Did you know that all fruits are carbs? Yeah – that’s right! Fruits are made up of natural sugars. Those sugars then turn into carbs inside our body during the digestion process. How about sweet potatoes or corn? Yup – you guessed it. Those are carbs too. “But, corn is a vegetable and I thought vegetables were good for me?” They are, but too much of a good thing can be bad. Corn is recognized in the body as a carb and also turned into sugar during the digestion process. Just be careful with how much corn and fruit you eat. Keep your portions and serving sizes under control and you will be just fine.
CARBS GIVE US ENERGY
Unfortunately, our bodies can’t just run off of hopes and dreams – they need fuel! Carbohydrates fuel our bodies and give us the energy we need to get through the day. Now before you think you can stay energized off of potato chips, we need to get some things clear. Something like a sweet potato or a banana can be consumed before a workout to give your body a substantial energy source. Those “good carbs”, will give you energy that will last. A “bad carb” will give you energy for a short period of time and will then send you spiraling down into a sleepy, dreary sink hole. Your body will feel groggy and lack the energy you desired in the first place. When choosing food, always think about the aftermath. Is that food going to help or hurt you throughout your day?
CARBS CAN ASSIST IN WEIGHT GAIN AND WEIGHT LOSS
Like I said earlier, too much of a good thing can be bad. Yes, fruit is healthy for you, but it also contains carbs. Healthy carbs that are consumed mindlessly are just as bad for you as an unhealthy carbs. If you eat an entire grocery store bag of grapes, you have just turned a good carb snack, into a bad carb snack – due to over eating. Eating too many good carbs can add weight, just like eating a few bad carbs adds weight. Good carbs that are used as fuel, like we just discussed, can be used by the body for energy during workouts, leading to weight loss.
Doesn’t it feel better to be informed? As opposed to being ignorant and just following along with the crowd, because of something you heard someone say at one time or another. All you have to do, is think before you eat. Get to know your foods and learn the difference between those that are provided to us for good and healthy reasons and those that are just there for unnecessary consumption. You can do it! Now you know that a carb is nothing to be scared of!
