Craving sweet, greasy or salty foods? Try these instead – your waistline will thank you!
I’m always looking for healthy substitutes for my favorite foods. Sometimes, it really feels like a second job. I won’t sugar coat it (no pun intended); it’s not the easiest task in the world. I have said it before, “if something tastes too good to be healthy, it more than likely is.” Now, that’s not to say that healthy food can’t be great tasting, but it isn’t going to be the same. But you can get pretty darn close!
I have put together a few of my personal favorites for this common struggle. Take a look and see if there are any that you might want to consider trying! I promise that I won’t steer you wrong…
HAMBURGER: PORTOBELLO BURGER
This always gets a few raised eyebrows when I suggest it, especially from meat lovers. Honestly though, I could eat them every day. As much as I do love a good hamburger, the reality of how animals are treated in the food industry and all the fat and grease that comes along with eating a hamburger, pretty much ruins it for me. Ground beef is naturally a fatty food. If you think about it (and I mean we will think about it in the happiest way possible so that no one gets sad for the sweet cows) cows aren’t running and leaping all over the grassy fields of the farms. The reality is quite the opposite. They normally stand in one small little area huddled together, chewing on grass for most of the day. That doesn’t give them lean bodies, which in turn, doesn’t supply you with lean beef. So, try out a portobello burger with a whole wheat bun instead! Portobello’s are very large mushrooms and they have a naturally meaty consistency. You can even grill or smoke them for the full effect of a great tasting hamburger! By choosing this option, you are saving yourself a SIGNIFICANT amount of calories and unwanted fat.
POTATO CHIPS: KALE or SWEET POTATO CHIPS
I don’t want to jump the gun, but I feel an obligation to do so. When I say kale or sweet potato chips, I don’t mean the ones in the stores that you can buy. You know, those puffs, sticks or weird crunchy pieces that all come in a bag? If you have read my articles before, you know how I feel about those deceitful “health” foods. What I am implying when I say to replace potato chips with kale or sweet potato chips, is for you to make them yourself! By slicing your sweet potato very thinly and laying them on a baking sheet, you can drizzle a little olive oil over them, some sea salt and even a little bit of pepper and bake them until they are the desired crunchy consistency you like! The same process goes for kale leaves. Just tear them up into however big you would like for them to be and you are set up! Guess what? Most people ARE NOT actually addicted to potato chips! They are addicted to the crunchy and salty taste we all know and love – not the bland boring greasy potato hiding underneath. Give them a try! The same preparation process works for other vegetables like egg plants, squash and carrots.
COOKIE DOUGH: DRESSED UP YOGURT
If you follow me on Facebook, you know that I recently did a LIVE video about this exact swap. It is BY FAR one of my most favorite food swaps. I love cookie dough. But what I don’t love, is how I can’t just have a little bite and move on with my day. I keep going back to the fridge to pinch off “just a little bit more”. Sadly in my case, “just a little bit more” ends up turning into, every 30 minutes until I realize that I have eaten half of a cookie dough roll. Do you have ANY idea how terrible that is for you? All the raw egg, the sugar and the fat? If you have the same struggling addiction to cookie dough that I do, try using Greek yogurt and add in a little vanilla extract, a few dark chocolate chips, a little peanut butter and some honey! You may think the combination of these things wouldn’t touch the taste of cookie dough, but they seriously do!
