In my time as a Trainer, I’ve seen people of all ages and physical abilities. One of the hardest things to see is when my clients can’t understand why their bodies won’t let them do something. Basically, it’s like their brain is telling them, “What’s the problem? This isn’t a hard task! Get it together! We’ve done things harder than this plenty of times!” Yet, their bodies are screaming, “Woah now! Brain needs to calm down! This is a challenge for me and I can’t keep up.”
It’s just frustrating to have your head thinking you can accomplish the task with no problem, but your body isn’t able to put it into motion. I remember standing in the kitchen with my Grandfather after he had just come back home from having surgery in his legs. We were talking about different balance exercises and techniques for him to slowly regain his ability to walk without stumbling or to stand without being off balance. I remember walking him through a specific routine and seeing the complete discouragement and frustration that made up his expression. He was tasked to stand on one foot, with only his two fingers lightly placed on the countertop in front of him, and have his other foot just hover by his ankle. Now, for many this may sound like a walk in the park. To him, it did also. But after 5 or 6 tries of this exercise, he became very flustered and agitated at himself. He’d shake his head and try again. Finally, I told him to give it a rest for a second. He looked at me, tapped his temple as if to say, “It’s just too fast up here and my body can’t keep up.”
After about 40, balance and stability can really become a challenge. Even if you were extremely active in your youth, over time becoming more sedentary and less physically active really changes the way your body works. By staying active and choosing exercises that will target your flexibility and balance abilities now, your future self will be very thankful for the past decision to take care of yourself. Little things like reaching into tall cabinets, pushing your kids on the swing, bending down to pick flowers, or walking up stairs can all become a challenge without a little preventive maintenance on our bodies.
