“I can’t afford it.” – this is one of my favorite excuses for avoiding the gym. Now before you think I am a soulless person, that doesn’t have any empathy for anyone else, hear me out. I absolutely have empathy. I do not however (as I have said in previous articles) have sympathy for a majority of people who tell me they can’t afford a gym membership. Let me tell you why…
Hundreds of people over the years have told me in one way or another, that they would love to join the gym, but they just can’t afford it right now. I always try to read the person to learn a little more about them before I let them know how they CAN in fact join a gym. I am not trying to spend their money for them, I am simply trying to find a solution to help these people realize that a gym membership really isn’t that far out of reach. Of course I know there are always special situations – jobs are lost and medical bills can sometimes throw you into a financial tornado of terror.
However, there are TONS of different ways we spend our money each month that could be spent much in much wiser ways. Wiser ways being…a gym membership! Take a look below to see a couple of the most popular purchases that are made monthly with the average cost. I’ll explain why you CAN cut out these particular items and by doing so, you will no longer have an excuse to join the gym!
Going out for drinks/Buying alcohol
I love a margarita as much as the next person, but you won’t catch me out at the Mexican restaurant each week, sharing a couple of pitchers with my friends. Why? Not only does the calorie count start seriously adding up (which leads to your scale number adding up) but your bill starts to add up too! By the time you get your bill and add tip, you are likely to have spent over $22! So, if you go out for margaritas with friends and family just two times a month, you have the potential to spend just a hair short of $50!
Costly drinking doesn’t just happen when you are out on the town. Many of us buy wine and beer to have at home. The average bottle of wine costs between $8-$12. If you buy even just one bottle a week for a month at the minimum price of $8, that’s $32 a month on wine! And let’s get real, most of us buy WAY more than 4 bottles of wine for a month. That being said, you are more than likely spending way more!
There are a million things on this earth that people would rather give up, than their coffee. I am not ignorant to that fact by any means. But sometimes, sacrifices need to be made in order to better our way of life, right? For example, the average person that goes to Starbucks, gets a size Grande (medium). I did a bit of research and found out the most commonly purchased drinks we Southerners purchase are the blended Mochas and Frappuccinos. These drinks are slam full of sugar and fat. Specialty coffees will pack on the pounds much faster than you would ever be able to imagine. Not only are they terrible for your heath, they are flat out awful for your wallet. A Grande Specialty Frappuccino/Mocha drink will run you between $3.50-$4.00. I’ll be generous like I have been and lean toward the lower end of the cost spectrum for my examples. If you buy two of these specialty drinks a week, you are spending around $28 a month! You are LITERALLY paying money to make yourself over weight. Sounds pretty ridiculous when I put it that way, huh? Ridiculous, yet true.
Now that you know the dark truth about your spending habits, what’s going through your head? It should be, “Wow! I can’t believe I never thought about it that way before! The money I am spending is causing me much more harm than good!” YES! It most definitely is. Want to know something great? For less than what you are spending each month on coffees and alcohol, you can become a….GYM MEMBER! At Gold’s Gym, our base membership price will cost you $19.95 a month!
