I’ve heard it all before. It’s honestly a rarity for me to hear a new reason or excuse that hasn’t already been thrown my way. Excuses about why someone doesn’t need help with their workouts, or help with learning the gym equipment, or even help with proper form. But that’s a normal experience in the life of a Personal Trainer. Normally you fall into one of two categories if you have this kind of mindset: The first being the person who is too timid to ask for help or guidance. Then there is the second type of person who says, “ I can just YouTube some exercises.” Or “I will just watch what the people around me are doing and learn from them.”
Keep reading to learn the reasons you actually DO need help, guidance, and assistance to achieve your weight loss and fitness goals…
1. You cannot “just YouTube” a workout
To clarify, yes, you can look up a workout on YouTube. But is it the right workout for you? There are many factors that go into a successful workout regimen and lots of questions that would need to be answered. Questions like, “Is this person demonstrating the exercise certified in fitness at all?” “Does this person know that people with bad back/knees/hips/etc. shouldn’t do specific movements?” “Is this person showing me the proper form and technique for these exercises, so that I get all I can out of my efforts?” “Will this particular regimen this person is doing, give me that body with the lifestyle I live and diet I eat?” There’s a lot more that goes into it than you thought, isn’t it? The last thing you need is to put all your faith into someone who doesn’t have the legal credentials to be giving you fitness advice or guidance. Not only that, you can’t guarantee that you are even doing the right moves that need to be catered to your own personal goals. Do me a favor and don’t “just YouTube” your next workout. PLEASE ask for advice from myself or any of our other Certified Personal Trainers at Gold’s Gym.
2. Machine hopping gets you nowhere.
I have a client that is one of the most dedicated people I have ever met in all aspects of her life, especially fitness. She has seen her number go up on the scale recently and finally got fed up with it. I didn’t blame her so we sat down and talked. We went over her nutrition, daily routines, and then got to her workouts. She has been with me for almost 4 years now and has a plethora of workout routines, designed specifically for her and what her goals were during particular times in her life. While we were talking she said, “I have been working out, but I just pick from different workouts now.” I looked at her with a very blank expression and said, “You know better than that. Why on earth would you do that when you have these workouts that are SPECIFICALLY designed for your goals?” She admitted that she just got lazy and there wasn’t an excuse. My point in sharing that story, is that hopping from machine to machine or exercise to exercise, will not yield the results you are looking for. You MUST have a plan that is tailored to your needs so that you can succeed.
3. You can’t copy your neighbor
Just like I mentioned with pulling from YouTube, you can’t possibly know someone’s background and credentials by just looking at them. Just because you see a man with really big arms or a girl with a very tiny waist doing their workouts in the gym, doesn’t mean you need to be taking notes on what they are doing. There are a lot of factors that can come in to play here as well. “Does that person have a Personal Trainer that taught them proper form and is that the proper form for that specific exercise?” “Does this person have a bad knee or back that they have to work around in their movements?” “Is that person working toward the same goals as I am?” That last factor is a biggie. Let’s say you spot that girl with the tiny waist and you manage to do her same workout with her each day for a month. Next thing you know, it is the end of the month and your shoulders are looking way bigger than before. Why? Well, that’s because this particular woman you chose to mimic, is training for a figure competition. She had a goal to make her shoulders stronger and bigger to help her in her competition. Now you are all upset because you still have extra weight in your legs and thighs. But hey, at least you have some great shoulders now, right?
Long story short – get yourself on a program. Our Certified Personal Trainers can help get you on a workout routine that will get you the body you are looking for – not your neighbors.
