Which food item does this personal trainer want you to just throw in the trash?

As a Personal Trainer and someone who is incredibly passionate about today’s food industry, I receive a lot of flack. I receive it from my readers, my clients, friends and even some family members. None the less, it doesn’t change my views and passions. That being said, I have one passionate view on a particular…consumable. I can’t even call it a food because it genuinely is not a food. It’s something that just disgusts me to my core and I wish I could rid it from the planet. What on earth could I be talking about?
Mayonnaise (insert gag noise here). There is no edible on this earth I despise more than mayonnaise. There isn’t much that gets me wound up, but for those who defend their love of mayonnaise, I like to make an exception. Listed below, are a few of my favorite “excuses” as to why someone needs mayonnaise. Of course, I have made sure to point out why their argument is invalid:
“If I don’t use mayonnaise, my sandwich will be dry or the bread could stick to the top of my mouth.”
Man. Yeah, that is quite a bummer. I see your issue. However, I am willing to sacrifice you eating a dry sandwich over sacrificing your health and well-being. Add some avocado slices or even some blended avocados and spread it on your sandwich. Instead of plopping on gooey white unhealthy fats to your sandwich, how about adding some bright and colorful healthy fats that can actually benefit your health instead of hinder it.
“But how on earth am I going to make my fruit salad without mayonnaise?”
Oh gosh. Every single time I think of this, I have to smile. I hope my client who said this to me is reading! She was one of my favorites I have ever had and I remember it clear as day when she said this to me. My jaw just dropped and I said to her, “Fruit! You just make it with fruit! Why on earth would you want to add mayonnaise to something like that?” In her defense, she’s part of a generation that commonly does that. It’s apparently a very common “Southern Cooking’” way to make fruit salad. If you MUST add in a creamy substance to your perfectly healthy and pretty fruit salad, consider adding plain Greek yogurt (only if you are a dairy eater, of course.) Please, please don’t add anymore fatty goo to your fruit salads!
“I think you aren’t being very reasonable. I’m going to just use “low fat” mayonnaise. Is that a good compromise?”
No, the answer is no. I refuse to compromise with you when it comes to mayonnaise! As I have said in many of my other articles regarding fat free or low fat foods, they have to have the fat replaced with something. Normally, the replacement is a chemical concoction of fillers and additives. That concoction is no better than the fat filled original. Why? Because it’s a lose-lose. You are losing a battle with your physical health by eating the fat filled mayonnaise and you are also losing a battle potentially with your mental health along with your physical health when you choose the so called “healthy” alternative to regular mayonnaise. The chemical filled option has a tendency to trick your brain into thinking that you are still hungry, thus causing you to want to eat more. Not to mention these additives haven’t been around long enough for researchers to see the long term effects they may have on our bodies.
Mayonnaise is a completely unnecessary addition to your foods. Hummus blends and avocados are going to be the best route for you to go. They provide us with healthy fats, plenty of fiber and they put our minds and bodies in a better stage of health and well-being. Do your trainer and your body a favor and TOSS THE MAYONNAISE!
