Anyone who has ever been on a diet or attempted to make a change in their eating habits, knows there is no shortage of fat free and diet food options on the supermarket shelves. In fact, there may be more “health” foods available than there are foods given to us naturally by the earth! There is obviously an abundance of these foods at our disposal, but should we really be eating them?
My answer to that question? Absolutely not! NO. NO. NO. For those of us who are educated and informed on nutrition topics, the reasons for not eating fat free, sugar free and diet foods are pretty black and white. But to the person who is new to living a healthy lifestyle, it isn’t always that easy. I’ll be honest; sometimes I forget that’s the case! I am definitely guilty of assuming that everyone has been brought to light on the good, bad and ugly of the nutrition and health world. That being said, I want to be the person who sheds light on this subject for you!
There is a simple rule I tell my clients to go by: Fat Free = Chemical Full. Don’t worry, I’ll explain what I mean. For foods containing fat, a significant percentage of the food’s composition is, you guessed it – fat. When you take that fat out of the food, you have to replace it with something that will have a similar taste, smell and consistency as the original food. So what goes in place of the fat?
Ah, the million dollar question!
There are two answers I like to give to this question. The first answer being sugar. Yes, sugar. Sounds crazy, right? Although I agree with you that it is nothing short of absurdly crazy to load up a supposed health food with sugar, it is sadly, gut wrenchingly common. When something is advertised as fat free, many people don’t consider the sugar content of the product. Do you know what happens to sugar once it is put into our bodies? No? Well, it is actually converted and stored as fat. Ironic, huh? That food or drink may be technically fat free, but after your body consumes and processes it, you my friend are not fat free!
The second answer to what replaces the fat in foods is – to be blunt – chemical garbage. It is a cocktail of who knows what, that was made who knows where, by people that have who knows what kind of qualifications. Chemicals and fillers have become unfathomably common in fat free/sugar free/diet foods. They are cheap, easy and in abundance. The food industry saves a lot of money by pumping your foods with this junk. Not only are they saving money in production, they are making even more money off of consumers with their diet foods, than with their non-diet foods. How? Well, those yucky, lab created fillers are genetically altered to mess with our brains. They trick our brains into thinking we need that fake junk. Our brains become addicted to the stuff in these foods, thus making us go out and buy more and more of these products. How do you like that? The food industry is even trying to control your thoughts! That is NOT OK with me.
The next time you go to your local gas station and find yourself staring at their cappuccino machine and wondering If you should drink the regular fat filled French Vanilla Cappuccino or the Fat Free chemical and sugar filled option, do me a favor; WALK AWAY. You know what? Don’t walk away, run away. Get away from that unhealthy, life ruining piece of equipment and get yourself a Fair Trade black coffee with Organic soy milk! Ok, maybe baby steps are better to start with. I will be patient with you!
