Did you know that the ingredients label on the back of prepackaged foods are filled with secret facts and bits of information? If you didn’t, don’t feel bad – many people don’t know about this. Truth be told, there are a lot of hidden secrets in the food world. Some of which could help us and some that could hurt us or have been hurting us for a long time.
I want to help you be as informed as possible. Here are 3 things you may or may not have known about nutrition facts and how they can help or hinder you on your weight loss journey…
THE ORDER MATTERS
Alright, so you may be someone who likes to read ingredients in foods before you eat them. That’s awesome, keep up the good work of staying informed! But did you know that foods on the ingredients list are listed in a particular order? Ingredients are listed in descending order of quantity, which means the first ingredient is the most prevalent in the product, while the last ingredient has the least amount in the product. Surprising? I know that a lot of my clients just assumed that that ingredients list wasn’t in a particular order. Did you think the same?
EXAMPLE: Health Fruit Drink
*Take notice to the fact that the #1 ingredient that is listed on the label is apples. Yet, there is no mention or picture of any apple on the product bottle. Yikes!
SERVING SIZE IS IMPORTANT
This is an important point that can be easily overlooked. People assume that a “serving” is what is sitting in front of them. Unfortunately, that is rarely the case. If you look on the back of a food product and read the label, you will see at the top that there is a part that lists the calories and then the “calories per serving”. Right above that, it will tell you what a serving size is for that particular product and how many of those servings are in there. By not looking at the serving size, you are at risk of over eating which leads to weight gain.

ACCEPT THAT DIET DRINKS AREN’T YOUR FRIEND
Are you one of the millions of people in the world, who think they are doing themselves a favor by drinking drinks that are labeled “fat free”, “sugar free” or “diet”? If so, then you are one of the many people that also happen to be at risk for weight gain, obesity, cancer and other terrible illnesses. You may be confused and I can completely understand that – let me explain. It is a very unfortunate misconception that diet and sugar free drinks are a better decision for your health. That is all around false. Regular soda may be packed with sugar, which puts on pounds, but diet soda/juices/flavored drinks all contain artificial sweeteners. Those sweeteners trigger your brain into thinking you are hungry when you aren’t – making you eat more when you aren’t even hungry! That’s going to put on the pounds and keep you from weight loss. The artificial sweeteners are also unfortunately linked to cancer and mental illness. It’s time to weigh your options – drink lots of sugar, consume something that is going to give you potential deadly health risks, or drop them all like the bad habit they are and keep it clean!
