Most people walk into the gym and can time their workout down to the second. They have their piece of cardio equipment, their weight bench and their spot in the mirror. Why do they have these self-proclaimed pieces and spots? Because these people don’t know the importance of adding in variety to their workouts. They continue to go through their same exact workout programs and gym routines day after day. All the time wondering why they aren’t seeing the results they are looking for.
Take a look at the top 3 reasons I have put together, as to why we all need to have variation when it comes to our fitness life…
1. Muscle Memory
Now, normally I would be using the phrase “muscle memory” in a different way; a more positive way. But, in this case, it’s a little bit different.
When we work out, our bodies start to get accustomed to the movements we are putting them through. They get comfortable. When done too often, they get a little too comfortable. What does that even mean, “too comfortable”? It means that once you have done the same exercises, the same way, with the same weight, on the same days each week for the same length of time, that your muscles are finally going to just idle. Not only will your muscles top out, but so will your progress.
Don’t get me wrong. You definitely need to be on a program. But what is going to keep you from hitting this muscle/weight loss plateau is adding in different movements and weight variations to your weekly workouts. Change IS good!
Sure, variety is positive for health reasons when it comes to working out, but you know what else it’s good for? It’s good for those of us who have the attention span of a flea. You know, the people who can’t stand to do the same thing more than one or two times. Otherwise they feel bored, not challenged and non-progressive.
Changing up the type of workouts you do, how you do them, where you do them and when you do them, is going to make all the difference in keeping you interested and on track with your weight loss and overall fitness goals.
3. Further Advancement
No one wants to settle for “good enough. Most people who are serious about making a change with their lifestyle and health and fitness levels, are constantly looking to be challenged. By keeping up the same workouts, we are limiting our abilities and chances to advance further. Changing up your workout is going to give your body the opportunity to work additional muscles that may be getting overlooked in your everyday routine or everyday movements.
The more variety we participate in, in terms of our workouts, the more success we are going to see out of ourselves. Don’t get too comfortable with your workouts. If you ever find yourself feeling like you are being under challenged or you feel yourself becoming uninterested, you’ll know then that you are way over due for some workout variety.
