Who doesn’t love the crunch of a freshly opened bag of potato chips? Or the warm buttery creaminess of mashed potatoes? How about the cool contrast sour cream gives a hot Mexican dish? I gotta tell ya, I’m not sure I can name even one person who doesn’t!
If you’ll notice though, everything I mentioned above is more of a “feeling” sensation as opposed to a “tasting” one. Crunch, cold/hot contrast and creamy are all oral sensations that we love. Did you know that is actually the biggest obsession for most people when it comes to food? It’s not the taste, but the way that it feels once it hits their mouth?
There are so many foods out there that we love but don’t love us back. They pile on the pounds and make us feel groggy and just plain yuck. I’ve got a few alternatives for you that will prove healthy can taste good and it can provide the same sensation that it’s not so healthy counterpart does!
Potato Chips: Thinly Sliced Baked Vegetables
Hold your horses. Before you “X” out of this article, hear me out. Like I told you before, our fixation with food is primarily the way it feels in our mouth. Try slicing up naked sweet potatoes, yellow squash or zucchini as thin as possible and baking it in the oven until it’s crispy. Another great option (which is one of my favorites) is Kale Chips! Take a bunch of kale leaves and pull them apart. Lay them on a baking sheet and drizzle them lightly with olive oil and then sprinkle them with a little sea salt, cayenne pepper and garlic powder. They are SO good! The crunchy feel when eating these vegetables is just as satisfying as it is when eating a bag of potato chips. You are just cutting out the white starchy carbs, preservatives and grease and saving tons of fat and calories!
There isn’t much more that I despise in the food world than mayonnaise. Even though I am not a lover of it, there are millions of people on this earth that do and some that do a little too much. I hear people say “But you have to have mayonnaise on a sandwich. Otherwise it’s so dry and you can’t swallow it!” Well, as much as I would love to get into my views on that, I’ll keep it simple. The actual “love” for mayonnaise that people have is actually a love for creaminess. Mayonnaise is one the highest fat “foods” we have on our shelves today. Since it’s just a feeling we are looking for, how about we change it up! Try blending 2-3 slices of avocado and spreading it on your sandwich or wrap next time. You will be replacing the unhealthy saturated fats in mayonnaise with the healthy natural fats that avocados provide. Not to mention you will feel much, much better after making the switch.
Mashed Potatoes: Mashed Cauliflower
Mashed potatoes are a go-to side dish for the majority of families in the U.S., especially for us Southerners. White potatoes themselves aren’t great for us, but they become even worse when we we add in all the salt, heavy cream, butter and sometimes even bacon. So instead, try pureeing cauliflower. The consistency is very similar to mashed potatoes if done correctly and you can eat much, much more since cauliflower is so low in calories!
Sure, I understand some of these healthier alternatives sound a little bizarre, but give them a chance! Why risk packing on the pounds, feeling gross or the worst of all, heart attack or heart failure. Is crappy “food” really worth all the risks that come along with it? I’ll answer that for you… HECK NO!
