Do you find yourself with that “2:30pm” feeling morning, noon and night? You pound coffee and energy drinks, but you still can’t seem to muster up the energy to continue throughout your day in a productive manner.
Hey, you aren’t the only one out there suffering from that lethargic feeling!
Unfortunately, YOU could actually be what’s interfering with your productive and energetic day. How? Well, your diet plays a key role in your energy level throughout the day. Some foods drain the body of its energy more than others.
Take control of your energy level and get more productive by avoiding the these foods:
Who doesn’t love doughnuts, eclairs, sweet-buns or cinnamon rolls? If you are like most folks and in a rush to get to work, you may go through a coffee house drive thru or run in to a pastry shop and grab one of these delectable breakfast foods. MMMMMM but uh oh!
Unfortunately, these sweet, sugary breakfast foods are key in robbing you of energy. The high sugar content of these foods are responsible for your sleepiness. Foods containing high sugar content cause your insulin and energy levels to spike for an extremely short period and then they quickly plummet your energy levels to where you begin getting that sluggish feeling.
You may go out with your office buddies to the local sports bar for your hour lunch break a couple of times a week. Sometimes you get a steak or hamburger as your meal. Pretty common lunch, right? Well, although they are common foods, that doesn’t mean there aren’t side effects. Red meats normally have a very high fat content. It takes a lot of energy for your body to break down and digest these fatty meats. Instead of a red meat, opt for something like salmon. Salmon is packed full of Omega 3 fatty acids which promote a healthy and active brain.
I get it! We’ve determined that you basically can’t be considered human if you aren’t a bread eater. In fact, I may get risky and call you a liar!
Who doesn’t love bread? Almost all meals are prepared with some sort of bread or bleached grain. Sandwiches, cereals, appetizer rolls – these are just a few that are commonly consumed every day. Breads are solid carbohydrates. These white carbohydrates are grains that are stripped of their nutritional value and therefore don’t contain fiber. So, because these breads lack that fiber, they break down quickly instead of breaking down slowly to provide the body a steady flow of energy for an extended period of time. Instead of white breads, pastas and cereals, choose brown rice and whole grain breads/wraps. Whole grains are filled with a high fiber content and will provide you with sustainable energy through the slower break down process.
I feel pretty confident that you and many of your co-workers, friends and family members eat one of these 3 foods or something that contains them at least 2-3 times a week. I guarantee that if you replace these foods with the better options suggested, you will feel a world of difference in your energy levels. Not only will your energy improve, you will notice that your thought process is so much clearer than it was previously. Give It a shot!
