“I am going out of town and there isn’t going to be a gym where I am going to be. So, I want to let you know, that I won’t be able to work out.” Oh, yes! That is just music to my ears! There is NO better excuse that I like to hear as a trainer, for a reason one of my clients can’t fit in a workout. Why? Because that’s EXACTLY all that waste of breathe was. IT WAS AN EXCUSE! Does it sound familiar? Have you used this excuse before to talk yourself out of a workout? If you have a floor and yourself, guess what?! YOU CAN WORKOUT ANYWHERE! Uh-oh. Busted…
Below are a few reasons to why body weight workouts are doable and beneficial for you in more ways than just weight loss. Take a look!
It is cost free!
Sure, you can do body weight workouts at a gym, but, it’s not necessary at all! If you could work out for free anywhere you wanted, why wouldn’t you? Hotel rooms, public parks, your living room- those are just a few of the places you can do body weight workouts when you are out and about or traveling for work. By being at home in your living room or bedroom, you can avoid social distractions you may normally find at the gym. Any open area where you can give yourself a little wiggle room will do!
You can personally customize!
Working out on machines can limit your range and the muscle groups you are working. By using your body weight, you are able to work and train muscles in ways many machines just can’t. Using your own body weight can help you customize your workouts to your own personal fitness level you are at, at the time.
They are time efficient!
Another very popular excuse I get is, “I just didn’t have time to get to the gym this week.” Sure. I can understand that. Life gets busy and sometimes there isn’t time to drive to the gym. However, that isn’t an excuse not to get your fitness on! If you have time to watch T.V. for 20-30 minutes, you can work out at home. If you are at the recreation fields waiting on your kids to get done with their ball practice, you have time to work out! Stop playing candy crush on your phone, get out of the car and get moving! Just because you don’t have dumbbells or an elliptical, doesn’t give you an excuse to slack on your physical activity!
Here are a few machines and their replacement examples, along with the muscle groups they work:
- Leg Press machine w/ a single leg squat: Quads and glutes
- Pec Fly machine w/ a push-up: Chest
- Overhead extensions w/ chair dips: Triceps and shoulders
- Crunch machine w /a plank: Abdominals
- Treadmill w/ jogging or jumping rope: Cardiovascular
Next time you think you have to miss a workout because you won’t be able to use the gym, think again! You now have a few tools that can keep you on your fitness game when kettlebells, free-weights and stair masters aren’t at your disposal!
