My fitness journey didn’t begin until my mid-twenties. I was a chronic tobacco user, fast food junkie and soda was pretty much the only fluid intake I had. Between being overweight and having a hard time breathing and sleeping, I knew I had to make a change. I started making changes on my own, learning a lot of things the hard way and giving up all my bad habits. After a few years, my life was totally turned around and my friends and family noticed. They started asking me for help and I was able to motivate a close friend to quit smoking, start exercising and to adopt a cleaner diet. Once I done this a few times and realized I had a knack for bringing out the inner strength of other people, I knew what I was going to do next.
After moving to Charleston from Chicago, IL, I researched different avenues of learning more about fitness and nutrition. After saving money for school, I came across the Trident Technical College “Fitness Specialist” program, which is a 1 year certificate offered to ~20 students each year. At first I was intimidated, but soon I was eager to keep learning and meeting new challenges. I quickly realized that joining this program was one of the best decisions I had ever made and I learned quite a lot in addition to also receiving my ACE (American Council on Exercise) Personal Trainer Certificate. I became president of our club “Fitness Lifestyle Initiative”, hosted an on-campus fitness festival and had the opportunity to experience all the different facets of exercise science, group fitness, nutrition and physiology/anatomy. After an internship with hands-on experience and working with clients on a regular basis, I was ready to dive in, which brought me here to my new home: Gold’s Gym.
