Growing up, I led an active life on a farm baling hay, tending to horses and picking fruit from our orchard with my family. I didn’t participate in sports because I was dedicated to riding and showing horses. During high school, I became interested in weight lifting and began training at home. When a local fitness center opened in my hometown, I joined and began to exercise more frequently.
I have been teaching group fitness classes since 1992. Before I began to teach classes, I was an avid weightlifter and group fitness class participant. I was inspired by an instructor from the fitness center to begin teaching classes. She helped me develop the confidence and the skills to become certified in Group Fitness.
In 2003, my husband’s job brought us to the Harrisburg area. I was teaching Science at an alternative school and had a four-month old son when we moved. My husband and I decided that I would not search for a teaching job when we moved. Instead, I would look for a part time job teaching group fitness classes. As soon as we were settled in our new home, I began teaching group fitness classes at a local health club that began to focus on building their older adult fitness program. I became the Senior Advisor for SilverSneakers® and attended the workshops to get trained in SilverSneakers® Classic and SilverSneakers® Circuit. I have been teaching both classes since 2004.
Working as group fitness instructor and Senior Advisor, I get personal satisfaction in helping people improve their lives through exercise. I am able to develop meaningful connections with my participants. I’m there to support and guide them through their fitness journey. I am able to create classes that are safe, effective and fun so that participants have enjoyable experiences, feel motivated to adhere to a regular routine of physical activity and reap the many benefits that exercise has to offer, both physically and mentally.
