Summer months usually are full of barbecues, poolside gatherings, shorts, tank tops and bathing suits. And the idea of getting into shape for summer clothes can freak most of us out!
But as much as we tend to panic during the summer months, whether it’s about fitting into a bathing suit or looking good at the pool or beach, it’s also really easy to fall off track with our diets. Vacations, cookouts and fun social events usually mean we have less time to prepare our food and get into the gym. And because we aren’t following our normal healthy schedule, it’s really easy to gain weight and lose all of our hard-earned muscle!
How To Stay Fit For Summer
So how do you stay fit for summer and avoid this frustration? Do you just wait it out and wish for winter months so you can cover up the damage with heavier clothes? Or would you rather rock your summer bod all season long? I’m guessing you’re opting for the latter!
There’s no need to head into winter stressed and disappointed because you’ve had too much fun this summer. Let’s go over my top five stay-fit-for-summer tips so you can remain healthy and in optimal shape for the next couple of months!
Schedule Physical Activity
It’s summer! For most of us this means a chance to get outside. Schedule vacations and get-togethers around exercise. Go exploring, hiking, surfing, adventuring, etc. Get out and try something new and burn calories while you’re having fun! But don’t put your gym membership on hold just because you think you’ll be busier. Often your gym will offer fun and creative ways to help you stay fit for summer; look for outdoor boot camps or try a new class you’ve been eyeing the past few months. Sometimes it’s easier to get in when attendance is down. Keep it fresh and interesting!
Try New Recipes
While summer usually means more barbecuing, it doesn’t mean you have to eat the same traditional cookout foods. Try new, healthier recipes at your upcoming barbecue and learn how to make lighter desserts and cocktails to fit these warmer months. Stock your kitchen with lots of seasonal produce to keep it interesting, too!
Warm summer months usually make us sweat, so it’s time to drink more water. Ditch the extra calories when hydrating and double up on your water intake. Add lemon and a dash of sea salt to your water along with frozen berries for extra nutrition. This is a surefire way to help you stay fit for summer and avoid eating unnecessary calories.
Increase Fiber and Continue Your Protein
Opt for foods that fill you up without having to eat more. Choose foods high in fiber, such as fruits and vegetables, and choose lean cuts of meat to help fuel your body and keep you full without packing on unnecessary pounds.
Ditch the processed foods and pick whole foods whenever possible. Have lean, organic meats ready to go, along with a stocked fruit basket and sliced veggies in the refrigerator. When you have lots of easy, grab-and-go options readily accessible, you’ll be less likely to overindulge or cave into temptation at the nearest drive-thru. It’ll be easy to stay fit for summer!
