Our Gold’s Gym Scholarship winner this year was Daymon who will be attending Baylor University. Below is his essay. Congratulations Daymon!
Hello my name is Daymon Gonzalez, and to many of you I maybe a complete stranger and to others we may have just met. I am from Amarillo, where I am currently a senior at Caprock High School. Where if you ask my fellow peers, they are likely to describe me as the nerdy, involved person. Yes while people may consider me a nerd or a know it all, I don’t mind. I believe that this is because I have a manifest desire to succeed. For which I would like to give my family credit for. I grew up in a simplistic house with my mom and dad, and two brothers, multiple dogs, chores. My parents weren’t the ones who were willing to let me lose my potential. As my father has told me on many occasions “it’s not the fall that matters, but what you do to get up from it”. They have festered my aspiration for success. I never give up and always give my one hundred percent. I help in anything and everything, whether that being I represent National Honor Society, Student Council, Superintendent Ambassadors, Varsity Choir, Show Choir. I take pride and contribute in everything I am involved. I am by definition a leader never willing to surrender.
I feel that receiving a scholarship is more about earning it. I believe that in order to receive a scholarship you must intend to continue towards greater education. However most importantly I think that you must contain a sense of yearning. Which I do believe I have that yearning. I have such a fierce desire to be successful in life and everything I do. In which my thought of being successful is not measured by what you have but the abilities and attributes you bring to the table. I bring many. I am dedicated, passionate, collaborative, caring, helpful, and above all I am eager. I am eager to further my education and eager to begin these next steps to having a successful future.
So throughout this speech you have heard of my desire and intent to further my education so I can be successful. Which now has come the time to tell y’all exactly how I plan to do this. I have been accepted to Baylor University. Where I plan to study and major in political science. I chose Baylor based on the school’s reputation for creating successful students. Students that go off to become major figures in community. They help shape and mold young students that have the desire to learn and improve, not only themselves but in their communities and even the world they walk on. It’s for this simple reason that I can see myself being a Baylor Bear. It’s why I chose to be a Baylor Bear.
